Given the current issues facing the PSP, Sony execs say don’t hold your breath for a successor - at least not yet.

Though the PSP continues to enjoy healthy hardware sales, SCEE president David Reeves recently acknowledged the system’s biggest weakness is its dearth of new software - something gamers have been painfully aware of for quite some time now. Reeves told MCV there are “currently no plans for a PSP 2,” since Sony already has its hands full.

Sony has explored different ways to jumpstart the PSP, including launching the slightly redesigned PSP-3000 and offering downloadable games for the PSP through the PlayStation Store. Reeves said the company is still focused on the current generation PSP and has chosen to tweak and improve the device instead of working on its follow-up.

Counterfeit gaming consoles are flooding the UK in response to Christmas demand, according to customs officials.

The fake consoles pose a variety of dangers to UK gamers, including electrocution, fire and simple disappointment when they break.

“Across the EU the rise in counterfeit electronics is growing very rapidly, it was barely on the radar until very recently. It used to be fake Nikes and Gucci, but now we’re seeing fake PSPs and high-end iPod-style mp3 players more often”, said a spokesperson for HMRC.

One current example is the so-called ‘Red Dragon’ DS lite, widely available from well-known online auction sites, none of which are genuine UK models.

The latest news comes from a recent EETimes article that talks about a joint venture with Imagination Technologies Group to manufacture a certain chip set for a unit called the “PSP 2.”

The chip set in question is similar to the POWERVR SGX graphics processor, and you can find the SGX chip sets in everything from palmtops to mobile PCs and that is the SGX55x graphics chip will be used in the upcoming PSP2.
